Kojo Nnamdi Talks Common Core
On NPR recently, host Kojo Nnamdi interviewed two teachers from Washington, D.C., about Common Core. The teachers said that Common Core will put an emphasis back on “student-centered classrooms.”
Stu Wulsin, a math teacher, explains the conceptual techniques help students retain and apply skills, and put students’ thinking first, instead of “I do, we do, you do” pedagogy. Carlie John, an English teacher, says in the same way the standards encourage students to explore material themselves instead of relying on teachers. Both also note Common Core encourages creativity within lesson plans and curricula.
Once again, teachers familiar with the standards applaud them for putting more emphasis on student creativity and engagement rather than rigid structures that often leave students behind.
