Raising the Standards for Latino Students
On August 22, 2014 the Collaborative for Student Success in conjunction with the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC) held a press event featuring former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. The press event was held to announce several new initiatives by the NHCLC to close the achievement gap and affirm the support of Latino Evangelicals for rigorous education standards.
Huckabee said he joined forces with the NHCLC because he felt the way to address this problem is to change the curriculum and standards for minority children through initiatives like the NHCLC’s “Raise The Standard,” which calls on Hispanic parents to be more involved in thier child’s education and for pastors to also speak about education in the pulpit.
Gov. Huckabee also encouraged conservatives to stop the fight over Common Core, and bring the focus back to the kids.
On the same day as the press event, Dr. Carlos Campo, chair of the Hispanic Education Alliance at NHCLC, penned an op-ed that appeared in Christianity Today titled, “What the New Majority-Minority Public Schools Mean for Christians.“
