Tennessee Governor Stands By Common Core
Gov. Bill Haslam continues to be a strong supporter of Common Core. While addressing a Tennessee Rotary Club, he said that more rigorous standards in Tennessee have been followed by improved scores on national tests. “We’re seeing real progress in Tennessee and shouldn’t back up.”
Some opponents of Common Core see Gov. Haslam’s review of the standards as somehow retreating from higher standards. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Quoted in the Knoxville News, Gov. Haslam said, “My commitment is to say we’re not moving on standards. Unfortunately there’s a lot of misconception that’s grown up around it. We’re seeing real progress in Tennessee and shouldn’t back up.”
Several states, like Tennessee, have called for a review of CCSS; that doesn’t equate to repeal. The Standards are designed explicitly so states can build upon them further, and the review process is important to ensure states properly fit the Standards to their students’ needs.
