Event Series: Explore How to Best Measure Learning Loss during COVID-19

Identifying how much academic ground America’s students have lost due to school closures will be a central issue for educators and parents when school resumes this fall.

To assist experts and policymakers in starting these conversations, the Collaborative for Student Success was pleased that its Assessment HQ site hosted a series of discussions in June 2020 focused on the “COVID slide” and the role of assessments in gauging where students stand in these unprecedented times.

The conversations were led by Dale Chu, the author of the Testing 1-2-3 blog on AssessmentHQ.org. Dale and other education experts dove into topics such as learning loss, the effectiveness of diagnostic tools, and how the lack of spring 2020 state assessment data will complicate accountability systems.

The first event, titled “Measurement Matters,” focused on why measuring learning loss is an important issue, and the tools available to do so. Guests included Bill Porter, a Partner at Education First, and Chris Woolard, the Senior Executive Director for Performance and Impact at the Ohio Department of Education. Check out the recap and recording here.

The second event in the series, “Diagnostic Dilemma” focused on the challenges and opportunities of implementing instructionally informative assessment options. Guests included Laura Jimenez, Director of Standards and Accountability at the Center for American Progress, Juan D’Brot, Senior Associate at the Center for Assessment, and Eric Becoats, Superintendent of William Penn School District in Pennsylvania. Check out the recap or recording here.

Our third and final event, “Summative Spring,” focused on the complications for accountability systems amid a lack of spring 2020 state assessment data and looked ahead to the spring 2021 assessment landscape. Guest included Jack Markell, former Delaware Governor, Lynn Olson, Senior Fellow with FutureEd, and Denise Forte, Senior Vice President for Partnership and Engagement at The Education Trust. Check out the recap and recording here.

About the Collaborative for Student Success

At our core, we believe leaders at all levels have a role to play in ensuring success for K-12 students. From ensuring schools and teachers are equipped with the best materials to spotlighting the innovative and bold ways federal recovery dollars are being used to drive needed changes, the Collaborative for Student Success aims to inform and amplify policies making a difference for students and families.

To recover from the most disruptive event in the history of American public schools, states and districts are leveraging unprecedented resources to make sure classrooms are safe for learning, providing students and teachers with the high-quality instructional materials they deserve, and are rethinking how best to measure learning so supports are targeted where they’re needed most.
